Is it possible to gain a visa to india without a return or departure ticket? Is proof of sufficient funds enough?

Unless arrangements have been changed recently, you can't get an Indian visa on arrival; but have to obtain it from an Embassy/Consulate before you travel. In my experience you don't need to show your tickets to obtain a visa, and they're not interested in your finances.
