I am out of touch with employment law now, but I would have thought his employer would have had to give a reason for terminating his employment. As he is 70 it could be to do with insurance, but the employer should give a reason.
Once beyond retirement age, a person (your dad) can request to continue working, employers have to consider the request but do not have to accep it.

They also have to give 6 months notice to employees about their intended retirement date so your dad certainly isn't being given enough notice.

thankyou for replies very helpful anymore info would be great. thankyou
Further to previous answers your father's employers actions may be because their insurance company will not cover an employee over 70 to drive a company vehicle. Equally there may be a lower limit, say 25 and as far as i know it is not classed as discrimination to impose restrictions on who in the workplace can or cannot drive a company vehicle.

My company vehicle insurance restrict drivers aged between 25 and 70 who hold a valid driving licence.

Also employers liability insurance may have age restrictions; for example I cannot employ anyone over the age of 73.

If your father wants to continue working, before having a further meeting with his boss about trying to delay his retirement, it might be a good thing if he can get a letter from his DP certifying that he is still fit to drive. It may be that the company''s insurance company will not insure any driver over the age of 70, in which case his employer will have little option to get him to retire unless he can offer him a non driving job.
