is a request from a solicitor on behalf of a client that something is required to be done and asking for confirmation to this effect something that must be done.
in other words how legally binding is any such request?

A request is simply that and is not legally binding on you.
Depends on what they are requesting. If they require you to provide your insurance details because you have been involved in an accident with their client then the law requires you to do this.

Always take legal advice before choosing to ignore a solicitors letter.
