Is it a legal requirement to pay staff for time taken to attend hospital appointments?

No - a lot of employers make you go in your own time.

Obviously it depends of the nature, is it one appoinment for something minor or numerous appointments for a serious illness? Some employers are more compassionate than others but there is still no legal right to be allowed time off to attend.
