can you please tell me what causes the cylindar head gasget to go in the car?. and at what price would a new one cost me, i have a fiat punto 03 reg

there are numerous reasons and some cars suffer the problem more than others. the Rover K series engine is notoriously bad. On older cars corrosion in the cylinder head waterways can cause it. Cars with aluminium heads like yours and most modern engines often suffer gasket failure if overheated, gasket design is another cause with several modfied ones being produced to cure the problem. sometimes poor assembly seems to be the problem
a head gasket costs from a few quid to maybe �20. However- thats assuming you do it yourself. If you get a garage to do it you are looking at the best part of three or four hours work at anything around �60 to �80 per hour.

Ive been quoted �450/�475 to get this fixed by the garage.
