Hi sodium, you are not alone - many people suffer from this even from a young age like yourself.
A good site to get info. about IBS is www.helpforibs.com/
or just type in IBS and google for some info. there are many sites. A young relative of ours has the same problem and she has to keep away from coffee, alcohol, high fat foods etc. as these items trigger an attack. Things good to eat that shouldn't cause an attack are: bananas, mushrooms, potatoes, carrots, oatmeal (porridge) rice and pasta as these soothe and regulate the digestive tract.

Re: feeling panicky, that is understandable. When you feel that way just take long, slow, deep breaths inflating your lungs fully, and that is calming.
Also, (and I know you will probably pale in horror at the very thought) it is possible to wear a hygiene pad inside the pants as this would relieve any worry of 'having an accident'. ( I'm not being coarse, just trying to be helpful.)
Good luck.
dot.hawkes has come up with a brilliant site , so that should be a big help to you.
failing that I have seen a book on Play.com about IBS and how to change your diet to relieve the symptoms. Hope you'll be better. try doing short trips near the vicinity of the loo and then as you learn more about your body travel further.
I suffer with this and am much older than you !
In my case my GP said that as you get older the lining of the bowel gets thinner and you can get an is intolerance to certain foods .What once you could eat with no qualms suddenly turns on you !. In your case as a young person ..apart from all the helpful advice already given I would look at things that you may be allergic to..such as dairy foods and things containing gluten.Try a dairy free diet for a while and see if that helps ..the same with gluten.
As for that horrible feeling that you get while you are out and about and have that "must dash " feeling try Imodium..it does help. Try not to put yourself in streesful situations ..because this triggers it off.
Don''t panic ..loads of people suffer with this ..you are not alone.
One thing my GP did say ...was not to overload on fibre.A certain amount is good for you..true ...and I used to up my fibre intake only to find it made it worse .All things in moderation .....hope you soon feel better
Hey Sodium.

I suffer with IBS very badly but mine is triggered by stress and virtually nothing I eat triggers or helps control it. Do you know if it is certain types of food causing it to flare? I though mine was triggered by all sorts of things at first but eventually worked out it was stress related.

I would strongly suggest drinking peppermint tea morning noon and night to help, it's brilliant or if you don't like the tea (it'sa not really that offensive) try taking peppermint capsules.

I know what it feels like to worry about having an 'accident' when out but trust me, it may feel EXTREEMLY urgent but you have more control over it than you think you do. I've had days where I really haven't dared to leave the house but for the most part, you can control your bowels long enough to find a toilet, I have often just nipped into McDonalds or a pub somewhere.

Hope you manage to find a solution that suits you because it really is very managable once you have the knack. Good Luck :D
You sound almost exactly like me, except I am a little younger. :P

I find what's helpful with my panic attacks (and I know this can be tricky when your out and about) is to keep something on you that is familiar and comforting, so when you feel that spacey feeling you can get with panic attacks you can bring yourself back with a familiar item. I tend to wear a perfume that I really like, so if I begin to feel panicky I just smell it and the familiarity helps me calm down.

Another thing you could try is something called Badger Balm, which is supposed to help you sleep, but the lavendar smell is very soothing and the tin is small enough to keep in your pockets, and you can use it as a lip balm. :)
