Cuff links, there are 2 types of blokes in the world ones who reguarly wear shirts that require cuff links and those that don't. The ones that don't will at least once in their life require cuff links.

night out a good idea - do you have a Comedy Club near by or something. He will know you have put a bit of thought into it if you come up with something/someone you know he likes. You will get to enjoy it too.

Why not a book on something he's interested in so you can write something nice in the front. I've got quite a few books people from my past gave me and I love reading what they had to say, they bring back a lot of memories...
