I couldn't pay for a train ticket today so I had to fill out my information for a penalty faire but I panicked and used an old friends name and address but I used my card to pay the amount for the ticket. Obviously it was a different name so I said it was my friends card. I've made a terrible mistake and I'm very worried now, will I get away with this and what will happen to me if I don't? I don't talk to the person anymore and we are not friends btw, I just want to pay the faire and get it over and done with, how do I pay it and what will happen to me ?

Kval's idea is a good one, contact them and get the Penalty Notice sent to you, then you aren't implicating the old friend.

A lesson hard learned, we all have them.
Sapel - Very_Scared seems to have joined the site only about 45 mins ago looking for answers/reassurance re the matter - so I would assume she is Very_Scared indeed.
I'm not bullying you Sapelesam, I simply mentioned your astonishing double standards- if you don't want it mentioning perhaps you ought not to have them? Very_scared- please don't worry about this unduly, it was a daft thing to do, but do as suggested and all should be well - just please don't do it again :) x

kvalidir, we are both grown ups and as such can acknowledge that we will always have differing opinions. I apologise if I upset you, shake hands, and say goodnight.
To Very_scared, I apologise if I frightened you, follow the other replies and I'm sure all will be well.
That's very decent of you Sapelesam, thank you. I was simply extremely concerned about very_scared, as she struck me as genuinely frightened and I was worried about her well being. Pax it is then, no hard feelings :)
That saves Ed some work.
Got to keep those mods busy :)
Couldn't believe how quickly our CB posts went.
No I'm amazed there was a mod prowling about at this time on a Sunday night. We'll have to plan our next argument far more carefully lol :)
Go to CB if you you think Harvey Weinstein is innocent.
Awww, glad you two have made up...

I note v_s not responded yet. I think the advice given here is good, and lesson learnt, presumably. Yes we all do daft things sometimes. I can understand wanting to leave a mistake in the past so avoiding giving a right address, but it can make things worse as you've discovered. Good luck with it all.
The penalty IS the penalty fare, it is £20 plus the original full fare. There is NO penalty notice sent to the address, that is just for the records so that they can see if the person is a fare dodger who does it regularly , it which case there can be a conviction as well as the penalty. If this is a one off there will be nothing sent to the address given.
used to be ok just to pay on board like a bus... sometimes when running late it is much easier than joining a queue at a ticket office... things have changed... when travelling from Watford Junction I rarely had a ticket into the city...simply paid the wee man...

^ that used to be the case , but here we have automatic ticket barriers now, you can't get through unless you put a valid ticket into the reader. A trick used to be to buy a 'permit to travel' on the platform.
As long as you had one you just had to pay the balance if a ticket inspector was on the train . You had to tell the inspector that you had no change only notes as the permit machine did not take notes.
I used to buy a 5p permit to travel , my journey was only 1 stop, and there was no ticket barrier at the destination. I only had to pay the fare 2 or 3 times a month, usually I got away with paying just 5 p for a permit. As long as you had that they could not issue a penalty.
But now you can't even get onto the platform without a ticket.
