The Sun reports that the passport of the Jihadist brother of the twin girls who recently fled to Syria has been revoked. I can’t find this report anywhere else, but if it’s accurate is this the way to go? Should we stop all those who go to fight holy war abroad from returning here?

If this report is true and he arrived back at Heathrow airport what would the authorities do with him?
Surely he couldn't board a plane without a valid passport Sandy.
It would certainly be a way of maximising consequences for potential Jihadists, but could not be made to work for people born here of British heritage I'm fairly sure.
I can't read the link because I'm not a member but I'm assuming he was born elsewhere but holds a UK passport. Anyway, intricacies aside, I think it's an excellent idea and actually something which might deter young people, because I'm sure it's pitched as being all very noble and exciting fighting a holy war, but it's altogether another thing when you can't come back. That's life changing in ways most people don't want who might get involved.
Douglas, say he boarded a plane in Turkey using the passport that took him there in the first place. It would seem to the Turkish authorities to be valid.
Oh, they cant take his nationality away from him, unless he has another - which he may.

I am not certain that a passport is necessary for us Brits to re-enter the country. But then if you cross the border with a pubic beard and a kalashnikov and turban, are they entitled to say hes not one of us ?
Yes, it would get my backing ( but there's no way I'm Getty a Sun membership to read the article ;-))

Turkey seems to be the route that British Jihadists use to enter Syria. If his passport has been revoked, surely that would also invalidate his Turkish visa?
Yeah big rules for boarding a plane without a passport or visa
I think they charge the airline
BUT

that is not the question - if he turns up at Caliss,
and they say you are the famous jihadist, XYZ and youre not coming in,

he could say you know who I am am and therefore I have a right to enter....
I'm pretty sure the Turks of whoever would have a list of cancelled passports and would act accordingly Sandy, especially as this seeker after truth and justice is young and would therefore have a scanable passport.

Zacs, I hasten to make it clear that I don't have Sun membership - the very idea! ;o) The clip from yesterday's paper has been sent to me.

The family are from Somalia I believe.
Yeah.....right! ;-)

Ha ha! That's my story and I'm sticking to it!!!

Soaraway Naomi has a ring to it. :)
oh dammit it all

yes Somali refugees - in which case they can take his nationality from him.....and he 'goes back' to being Somali...

yeah sorry, forgot
.

and do the family have to start to pay the 'bedroom tax' because there are no so many rooms in the house, vacant ?
Yes I think they do......
Didn't the government of the day send a frigate to Spain to rescue one of the Mitford Gals who'd gone there to take part in the Civil War? Changed times, indeed.

she must have been on franco's side, sandy. ;-)
Surprisingly, she was a Communist. But also related to Churchill.

While all her elders were trooping off to Munich, Decca was languishing at home, but not for long. She heard that her cousin, Esmond Romilly, had run away from school to fight with the Communists in the Spanish Civil War and the next year, 1937, she eloped with him. She was 19, he 18, and the fact that he was Churchill's nephew made for gratifying headlines.

The runaways got as far as Bilbao before being rescued by a British destroyer
I guess he'll have to hitchhike across Europe and get some of the Sangatte crowd to show him how to do the last leg.

If only they had enough respurces to run a scan on every truck at entry ports, not just the 'grounds for suspicion' ones, eh?
