Was the sentence which meant he would never be free too harsh?

Actually a released 'lifer' can be returned to jail without even committing another crime. Every release on licence comes with conditions that must be kept to, a common one is to avoid going to a certain area , for example the area where the crime was committed. So a 'lifer' could be returned to jail just for visiting the 'wrong' area .
More taxpayers money to be p*ssed up the wall.

I had rather hoped that the criminal fraternity on the inside would have meted out 'justice' by now.

Hope springs eternal......
pusskin ,Mobile phones are not permitted in any prison for any prisoner at any time.
TV in prison is not a 'right' it has to be 'earned' by good behaviour a prisoner who breaks the rules will have his/her TV withdrawn.
I think the point is, Eddie, that people mean he should be locked up for life. The sentence may still be there - but they are released.

i'm sure anyone responsible for butchering an innocent man with a machete will keep that in mind
most people just want him to stay in jail for his natural life.
The legal processes will rightly take their course

They won't make any difference

He will be released some considerable time after Ian Brady
one assumes Brady will die sooner than later.
you're right emmie (but that doesn't count as a release :-)

He'll probably be safe in the company of like minded prisoners. His real punishment will begin with the realization that from now until the day he dies every day will be the same. No change, and no hope. I wouldn't be surprised if sometime in the future he topped himself.
One can only hope, sandy.
if he does then its no loss.
I think its actually quite an interesting refinement of punishment to allow an appeal then at the appeal go "well we have heard your appeal and the answer is no....but do feel free to try again" Nothing like letting someone get hopeful then dashing it down again to extract the last iota of pain from a situation....
LOL, very good idea that, woofgang.
death penalty .............. nothing less
who is going to pay for the appeal? I have a length of rope hanging about in my shed.
possibly. I'm not quite sure what factors made the court think this was worse than other murders (many of which are also premeditated or involve strangers).
watching the footage, as i did, from the time they mowed down the soldier, to the fact of his virtual decapitation, which bystanders witnessed, to the brave women who went to his aid, to talk with these men who had committed a truly heinous crime. It is and will always be a defining moment in our history on terrorist activity, like seeing the horses and soldiers killed by the IRA bombs, you won't ever forget it.
