My mother is thinking of buying a new vehicle and she has the cash to buy outright if that gets her a better deal.

She is entitled to lease a car on the Motobility Scheme which means she would be spending her £220 a month mobility allowance but would keep her capital.

What is better for her, financially?

Spend the £200 on motability and keep her capital. A much better deal which includes insurance, all servicing, free new tyres, RAC membership, free replacement vehicle in the event of repairs.
I'm not really with you. What else would she spend her allowance on?
It's hard to say hc, go the motobility route and everythings in insurance, tax maintence, RAC, etc buy out right and you have to pay all these.I suppose it depends on each persons circumstances.I went Motoboility and I've never regetted it.
As sir.prize says any poblems and they fix them he only problem is you have to use the authorised dealers such as Kwik Fit but thats no real problem the kast time I had a flat I just went in gave them the car number and they changed the tyre in and out again I half an hour

There are a few 0% finance offers about at the moment, always worth looking at!
I have a vague feeling that part of the payment to Motability is interest on a loan, but i can't find any mention of it on the Motability website

useful stuff here

I helped my next door neighbour to do all the sums and he decided the best deal was to get a 'motability' car. The allowance only goes towards a certain level of car, but if you want you can a bit to get a 'better' car.

Don't be afraid to play the Dealers off against each other either, they want to sell you a car!!!
I'm getting worse.....

add a bit to get a 'better' car

Thanks for all advice, much to think about especially as we have only just discovered that end of the lease they give you the option to buy the car.
We have a motability car, some cars are available for no advance deposit , then there are bigger more expensive ones where you have to pay an advance payment to get them. Financially there is no comparison get the motability car!
A new car looses 30% minimum the second you take delivery,so buy a car for £15,000 on Monday and by Tuesday it is worth £10,000.With Motability you get a new car every 3 years.
Question Author
Anyone know what sort of deal they offer to buy the car at the end?
Is it a realistic used car price or inflated?
It is a catch 22. If you only do a low mileage the cost to buy after three years is usually high. If you do a big mileage, the car is not probably worth buying after three years.
You can also extend the three year lease to five years if you wish.

Another question - would she keep her no claims' bonus on her insurance?
hc, I've not read all the posts but there may be something to help you in this

It is a 3 a year lease they do not buy it off you. You just get another brand new car after the 3 years and hand back the old one. Literally all you have to pay is the fuel everything else is included. insurance, road tax, breakdown cover, repairs, servicing, replacements for tyres etc
Question Author
Road tax is zero anyway for disabled drivers, Eddie.
I know they don't buy it off you, I am asking about Mum buying it off them at the end of the lease.
sir.prize,I'm not sure but I think the option to extend is only available with cars that have had "special" mods i.e. wheel chair lifts etc fitted.
Fully comp Insurance is included no need to worry about NCB. You pay the same if you have 0% NCB or 90% NCB. No increase if you have a claim or even several claims.
