The communal lock has broken in a block of flats.
Can the cylinder be replaced again (been replaced once before) or does everyone now have to have a new key for a new lock?

The best thing would be to replace it with a keypad lock that way no one needs a key, they just need to enter a 4 didgit number
sorry digit
Even if you just replace the barrel, surely everyone will need new keys anyway, as a new barrel comes with a set of different keys??
I'm assuming it's standard door lock - the type you get on modern UPVC doors??
Sue, I'm assuming you have a regular Yale type cylinder lock, and not a Eurolock (type usually found on uPVC doors etc.)

Easy to replace the broken cylinder, as you know. It will come with new keys of course. If you want to keep the old keys, you'll need a "Re-keying Kit" to adapt the new lock to the old keys.

If you don't want to do it yourself, then a local locksmith would do it in no time.
I ought to say that, re-keying or re-pinning can also be done on a Eurolock if that's what you have.

I was informed using an original key to make a cylinder for the old lock cannot be done in certain circumstances.
In the past the locksmith has made a new cylinder to fit the keys - but not on this occasion.- Why?

Do not want to use a keylock pad for security - we do have some control over the keys.
