Have you just received a claim form or is it further along in the process and do you have a hearing date? Is your landlord private rental or social housing?

Have you tried to come to any payment arrangement with the landlord already?

If you have just received an N1 claim form, have a good read through the response pack which will come with it, there should be an Admission Form in there upon which you can make a payment offer which would then be sent to the landlord to see if they will accept.
You have asked you your position are you the tenant of a private landlord or are you a social housing tenant, it may make a difference.
What is your court appearance for? Is it the magistrates court for a liability order for council tax or is the county court for non-payment of rent, it will make a great deal of difference to the advice given.
It would help if you could provide some info on the questions asked, podscouse.
