Did the person who was supposed to pay the rent actually pay it? do they or you have proof?
sorry, but how do we know if its legal when you dont even tell us which country? even if you did mention the country, it's unlikely you'll find an expert in that county's law on a predominately british site. Also so what if you lose the house? You dont live there and only rent it. if you ever go back to that country then just rent somewhere else. whats the point in wasting 5 years worth of rent o somewhere you are not lving anyway?

this is a government landlord house in a british overseas territories.the island is part of the british empire.the government landlord offer me sales before i left the island, but only at the end of last year send a formal writen sales offer, the reason i continue the rent.it was at they inform me of rent arrears and family member was rearly making payments.they have now given three weeks to pay outstanting or take the house of the market, after making me wait 5 years.i feel the rent is thier fault ,had they inform me earlier not after 5 years i would have dealt with it.this is my home my children home. i wish i could report the cheeky answer
Part of the British Empire???
Firstly, there is no British Empire anymore.

Secondly, there is no such thing as British Law.

If you tell us the country (as bednobs asked), then you may have some help on this site.

If you insult people who are actually in a position to help you, then (unsurprisingly) you will not get any help.
what country is it?

and why would they offer you the sale option in writing just last year, when you were already four years in arrears?
Is the arrers for the whole 5 years worth of rent in total , or is it arrears because each year there has been a rent increase that hasn't been met ?
