Elder son took out £100 Payday loan from Toothfairy Finance in April. Doesnt live with me and I had no idea. Was meant to pay it bk the nxt week but didnt have work so he called me in a panic and I paid it for him - £118 in total.

I get a letter today to his name but my address, from a debt recovery agency. Said he hasnt paid the £100 back - so they have added £172 interest,£150 legal fees and £200 recovery fees!! I called them and they had no record of my payment. Looked at letter again and date was May. Rang son and he admitted he had taken out yet another loan the following month. Swears he didnt give my address and they must have stored it on system from me paying previous loan.

Q is - is that true or has he given them my address? And will they send bailiffs to my house as I cannot and will not pay this back for him - again.

FYI wipes are not essential. YOu can do a perfectly good job with a boiled flannel.
he borrowed it he repays it end of , and lets face it he obtained it by giving a n address he doesnt live at. tell him straight hes got himself into this mess etc, i know you want to help but do him a favour by making him face up to what he has done xx hope it all works out :0)
What's the worse that can happen? They can't kill him. He ends up with a CCJ and can't get credit for a few years.
god this is all you need..he needs to see a debt counsellor at the CAB NOW..they can negotiate with the lender and can often suspend interest..how are you smow .heard anything fro you know who ?..
I'd have words with a bona fide debt counsellor soonest (C.A.B as a starting point?) - they are gouging and there has to be limits to this.....I have no idea how the mechanism works. Your son should go with you.
ditto ummmm! if he's unemployed, what is the worst they can do? and it will prevent him getting more credit!

* PS angel123 that presupposes you have a flannel and the means to wash it, and smow just wanted to do the best for the baby*

Yes MM (other thread)
And he needs to get that to stop by sorting it out. HE needs to go to CAB for advice about HIS debt.
Question Author
yes I will ring him this morning and tell him, have enough to worry about at the min
Exactly smow - it's not your problem, it's his. Tell him you're not bailing him out and to get round to CAB now - and stick to it, no more help, you need it yourself at the moment. Does he know about your current circumstances (and if not, why not)?
you need to both go, call them up before to make an appointment. If you go there you will be seen, but my experience has been they make an appointment for you to see a legal advisor.

Yes he doesn know what is going on here
Cant go with him em - he lives 120 miles away!
Smow- I appreciate you're upset about other things in your life at the moment but this is really not such a huge deal for you personally- no-one can send in bailiffs or hold you responsible, your address can't be 'blacklisted' etc so it's only your son that needs to get his act together a little. As has been suggested, contact the company, see if you can negociate a reduction in their charges ( often very possible) and get rid of the debt asap. The you need to meet with your son and have a face to face discussion about how they are managing financially and how they can best use the money they have without getting embroiled in a payday loan again.
sorry didn't realise that, then he has to go, you must make it clear to him, and if he doesn't then that will mean this will rack up, as you have already seen. One thing about these types of loans is they can't be ignored. Experience has taught me that.

Im actually more worried about him now tbh. Spoke to debt company again - they say it is possible that they got my address from paying prev one off, and not from him. And its nothing to do with me - but he is only 18, trying to get work and if he cant sort this then he is going to start life out blacklisted and in debt already
can you call your local CAB on his behalf. Not suggesting he won't go to his local one, but advice from them always goes a long way to help. Good luck.
Smow - this is probably the best age for him to learn his lesson.
