I have just received a letter giving a hospital admission date of the 25th June.
I will be contacting Social Services re my father's care for 5 days but at present they are saying I will have to pay.
My father only has about £9,000.
I have doubts on being able to resolve the liability for payment in 10 days and I may have to pay and claim the money back.
I can not leave Dad on his own in the house.
Does anybody know what are my chances of recovering the money after I come out of hospital from Social Services?.

I was wandering whether you has spoken to Age Concern/AgeUk as they can give advice on these matters
sorry for typos! Shouldn't type while holding cup of coffee

Thanks Factor30

I have rang Age Concern and an advisor is coming back to me but she thinks Social Services should pay.

Sarah
I think that if you have less than 16,000 thousand pounds in savings social services should pay but I am not 100% sure do check with age concern or CAB
hi, you have nothing to do with it - your father should pay. you have 0% chance of recovering any money you spend on his care

Hi Everyone

Just to let you know that Social Services have come back and the manager has agreed they are liable for payment.
He has said there is a home close to where I live and they will want no payment and there is another one on the other side of the city which will require a £11 a night payment but he thinks the surroundings and the general look of the home are a bit nicer.
He has asked me to go and look at them and I am going in a few minutes.
Dad has told me to put him in the home which is the best all round as it is only 5 days.

Sarah
Good news. I'll look out for your next posting
without even doing a financial assessment??? Wow!

Hi Bednobs / factor30

I think they must have used the financial assessment forms I completed a few months ago when my father was in hospital but things have not changed very much if they ask me to complete a form again.
Dad has not won the national lottery or anything like that. I have helped him pay for a holiday and health insurance renewal but I have not given him any money.
We are going to use the home nearer where we live. The other home was nicer but my friend can bring Dad from the closer home to visit me.
I mentioned the finance to the person who took us around and it appears the rules are not so clear for temporary care.
The authority can either do a financial assessment or make a person pay a reasonable amount and the person's normal housing costs have to be taken into account even though his permanent home will be empty.
She thought as the house was mine this may be a moot point in my fathers case.
She knew the road I lived in and she knows the houses are expensive and thinks the Social Worker may have looked at my address rather than Dad's finances.
I am going to have a read of the notes she gave me and the various age concern factsheets.
As I have said before I want to be more prepared in case I have to go in to hospital for a longer time at some point.
The Age Concern advisor is calling back on Monday.
I am just hoping Social Services will honour their word.

Sarah
wow! You are amazing - went to 2 homes (1 right on the other side of the city) Had these complex discussions about funding and social services, make a decision, arrange things with your friend then rush back on here to tell us - all in the space of about 2 hours. Your red honda jazz automatic must be really fast.

I thought you were going to buy me a new red Honda Jazz.
I have concluded that I will be going down on size on the next change.
Any colour Jazz will do if you are paying for it.

Have you ordered your new Honda Jazz yet.
I thought of you when we passed the Honda Showroom but I did not go in as it was throwing it down with rain,

Sarah
Everyone seems to want a red Honda Jazz these days.
i only want one if it's auto though factor
and if it can acheive hypersonic speeds like moonglow's
I think you are confused, bednobs- it was janezz and oggleby who had red Honda Jazzes- Moonglow has a Honda Civic
Not been to see your Mum today then?
Moonglow has red Honda Civic but is considering a Jazz
