It is against the law to store more than 2 x 10 litre metal containers containing petrol on residential premises.
A jerry can holds 20 litres of fuel.
A statement on the BBC news site reads--
"Cabinet Office Minister Francis Maude advised storing petrol in a jerry can in their garage.".

Very presumptive of this Maude to think that every car owner has a garage?

Probably thought it up while eating his hot pasty from Greggs
Yes, by it's own.
This Government is so out of touch with ordinary people,it is untrue.
"Does the Government condone law breaking?"

No

Have they memorised the whole statue book?

No
Shouldn't one get one's chauffeur to deal with this sort of thing?
I think the advice is sound.

I also think that Francis Maude may have been guilty of nothing more than choosing the wrong name for the storage vessel, that's all.
It may be that the original jerry can held 20 litres, but the term is now commonly used for containers of other sizes. Just search "10 litre jerry can".
Who has room in the garage for a jerry can?
Francis Maude has also been slated by the Fire Service for his comments.
