how do magistrates work out the rate of court fees paid by the defendant if found guilty after trial

the court fees are requested by whoever is prosecuting. the magistrates decide if that is a reasonable amount and can decide to adjust or waive them.

my ex was found guilty after trial in magistrates i had a cps prosecutor , he was told to pay 1,000 pounds he was convicted of 3 assaults and 2 criminal damage
Probably only a fraction of the true costs of the whole legal process
