Defamation of character

I resigned from a retail company 4 weeks ago but 2 weeks into my notice was offered "Garden Leave" by the management, which I accepted. I left the company and the store in friendly circumstances. Since then, an ex-colleague has been informing the department that I was so much trouble I had to be escorted off of the premises (which is totally untrue) and telling other falsehoods concerning my departure. Where do I stand in a case of defamation of character despite no longer working for the company?
