Hi, I have just recieved a telephone call from a debt collecter who is claiming that i still owe on a debt from 2000. I paid a collecter at the door who gave me a card stating that i had paid. Unfortunatly I no longer have this as proof. Is there anything I can do??

Thanks

I don't have an answer, but trying to collect a six year old debt sounds very fishy. I'd just visit a CAB, and see what advice they'd give.

Usually a debt collecting agency is a last resort before the six year limitation is up. Ask them why they've left it so late if you hadn't paid and refuse to pay anymore otherwise the time can start again. Stand your ground.

It is possible your collector didn't hand in all the money, it happened to me many years ago, the collector was prosecuted. Make them prove you didn't pay. Always keep receipts for at least six years. Work out when the debt was due and stall for time until the six years are up in case they try to claim through the courts.

If they come round stronging it, get plod involved.
