My back gate is secured with a padlock, and I didn't use it for a while. Unfortunately, I now can't get it to open at all. Have tried industrial amounts of WD40, but can't get the key to turn. Is there another solution?

Are you quite sure you have the correct key?
Cable cutters ?
Hacksaw ?
I take it that you want to keep the lock otherwise it would be easier to hacksaw it off.

Also I assume the key is correct, if so try squirting 3 in 1 oil into the lock and gently twisting / untwisting the key.
Question Author
Definitely the right key (keys for shed and gate are on the same keyring and the padlocks are different makes)
Question Author
Not bothered particularly about keeping the padlock, but will try the oil option next
I had to cut a padlock off with a hacksaw - it was surprisingly quick and easy to do.
Borrow a pair of Bolt Cutters.
Replace with new Padlock
Make sure you oil in 3 places, the lock obviously, but also the top two sections where the hook/bar goes in as these may be stuck and causing the problem.
Other than that, bolt croppers.

Maybe I should try one of the local criminal fraternity (do live in a street with high number of people with criminal convictions), otherwise will speak nicely to friend with serious tools
"Bolt" that was the word my old brain was refusing to come up with. :-(

Is it on the shelves, if so in what area (Halfords is only 10 minute walk from my house)?

Thanks Methyl, have checked online and it's in stock so will wander round.
You could try giving it a blast with a blow lamp, welding torch for a minute or two
A soak in Coca-cola will remove any rust. It's the Phosphoric Acid that does the trick along with the agitation from the bubbles.
Does the key go in to its full depth? if not it could have a foreign piece of material inside by someone tampering with it. But it sounds like you will have to saw though the hasp - unless it is of hardened steel then it will have to be done with a bolt cutter or an oxy/acetylene torch.
Question Author
Key does go to it's full depth (padlock is on inside of gate), it just won't turn. Am going to try the penetrating oil as don't possess a blow lamp or even any Coca-Cola!
