A programmer’s job has been enhanced somewhat over the past few years; with major developments in technology and coding they have become a hugely valued resource in a workplace that is becoming heavily reliant on internet marketing and e-commerce.

As a programmer you will be expected to have a qualification in an IT related subject, such as Computer Science. This can be obtained from a college course or a more widely recognised degree for university. You will need to know the basics on how to code in a number of languages’ and have a solid foundation in using different operating systems. Knowledge of Java, C++ and PHP is essential, so if you are lacking in any of these areas then try brushing up.

Programmer can perform a number of tasks for a business and are very helpful to have around if anything IT related breaks. Typically, programmers deal with website construction and maintenance but there are those who handle sales and administration systems.

Some programmers take their talents a step further and design videogames, with a number of large developers like Electronic Arts and Ubisoft always looking to recruit the best, brightest and most passionate programmers they can find.

Salary expectations for a programmer job can differ depending on where you work and for what size company, but most can expect an entry level salary of around £18,000-£20,000.
