if someone who you require to be your referee has left that establishment, what do you do?

Make sure you keep their contact details so you can still get in touch for a reference if they are willing.

It's up to them really, would they still give you a reference?

Why couldn't anyone else there give you a reference?

You can explain the situation to potential employers and see what they state they need.
Just another thought, could you get a written reference from them in hand to keep with you just in case?

If it goes to an agent or similar or you can keep an original e.mail or letter so much the better/

Employer may accept it then with maybe an additional bona fide reference.

what happens if there is no one else at the place of work who knows you and you have lost contact with the employer?
Have they only recently left or is it your last employer maybe?

The workplace should be able to give a bona fide reference from records eg the dates you worked there.

Do you have another employer who can give you more of a character reference? Preferably job related.

If it's explainable, employers should understand. Women take career breaks all the time to look after children so I'm guessing it might be a common scenario there.
For previous employer i was told to give details of HR rather than a name of a manager, surely they keep records of your employment
Do you know where they went, if so you could phone the company or e-mail and ask them to give you a reference
