A friend of mine turns 65 in May he asked his employer if he could stay on. The company has allowed other employees to stay on after retirement age. They have refused hin and said they do not have to give him a reason for this refusal. Is this true? He just wants to know why after 15 years he cannot stay on as others have

Your friend is entitled to appeal but if tghe Company still refuse his request, they do not have to give him a reason why.

Age Concern are really hot on this topic and you may wish to speak to them.
Since 2006 it has been illegal to discriminate on age in certain ways - and the employer must follow a retirement procedure. There may be a precedent set if others have done it before but I suspect not - the employer can probably merely say the process has been changed because of economic considerations (Credit Crunch). Speak to Age Concern for further clarification.
