why take redundancy voluntarily and so put yourself out of work when your old man can only manage to work for a whole 13 hours a week?

presumably given a little time they will assess that job isnt worth doing because the handouts we chuck their way would make them better off.
things wont be quick. If there has been a redundancy payment, then they will be delayed even more - your friend will probably have found a new job by then. Is there a reason the partner cant increase his/her hours?
