Does anybody know the legal limit on working hours in 1 week. My girlfriend is currently working Monday - Friday and being asked to do 62 hours work. Surely this is illegal??

The legal maximum working hours for a 7 day period is 48 hours unless your GF agrees in writing to do more than this. Click http://www.legislation.hmso.gov.uk/si/si1998/19981833.htm#4 for the full regs. This site might be useful too http://www.dti.gov.uk/er/work_time_regs/
Who cares if it's legal? Your girlfriend's employers are taking the p*** big time especially if it's only over 5 days!!!
I also meant to say your GF should check her contract too - it should say something about her normal working week and what the overtime policy is (assuming her contract is legal of course). If you're not sure you could always ring the ACAS helpline on 08457 47 47 47 or follow this link http://www.acas.org.uk/rights/emprights_intro.html
Where are you BIGMAN?  The information given on the previous answers applies only in the EEC.  Have a look at The Working Time Regulations 1998.  This should tell you everything you need to know. There are industries which are exempted from the current 48 hour week and other qualifications so you need to see the regs for yourself.
