Where did "curiousity killed the cat" come from?

The suggestion behind the saying is that it's best to keep your nose out of business that doesn't concern you. Cats are especially curious creatures, always interested - when they're not sound asleep, that is! - in what is going on around them. The notion of the 'killed cat' probably implies that one got too close to something dangerous - a circular saw, perhaps? - and paid the ultimate price. The lesson for humanity is: Keep out of it!

The earliest use of the phrase apparently dates back only to the early 20th century, rather than being an ancient proverb.

..... "but satisfaction brought it back" is the ending of that phrase - so go ahead, stick your nose into whatever you want!!

Isn't the origen from one of Aesop's fables? It is often stated as being so, however I don't have access to my copy of the collected Fables to check.
