they could start a disciplinary proceeding, but i would have thought to be summarily dismissed, you would have had to have committed gross misconduct (i suppose it depends on the nature of the jke really)
As bednobs says, it depends on what the offence was, whether someone has made a complaint or the boss just thought you were out of order.

Ultimately you could be sacked if it was serious enough, though they'd have to follow a disciplinary procedure.
You'd hav had to hav done something really serious in order to be sacked and considering that you've been there for six years without any complaints at all, I'd say you're pretty safe. If you're cautioned about it you could always play the `stressed' card. Worth a go? So, go one then..... Is it just me that wants to know what the joke was??
lets have the joke before we decide!!
Below is what the charming chrissy posted on another topic explaining her "joke"...

"....it was verbal and was not actually said to the offended person but to someone else and was overheard...."

(well thats ok then, eh!)

"...As regards to the content of the joke, holding my breath, one of my colleagues asked if the BNP badge I was wearing was made of gold. I said that it probably came from the dental fillings of dead people of a certain nationality. It turmed out that the offended boss' wife was of that nationality which I obviously I didn't know. I know that's no excuse and I should never have said it but I did! ..."

she then huffily and indignantly went on to ask the members of AB -
who'd expressed their disgust at this comment, and unsurprisingly didn't view that she dared to post the details of the 'joke' as commendable bravado - as she bizarrely claimed -
- to be 'brave' enough to post some links to suicide sites...presumably "that'd show us!"

seems jokes about suicide are utterly hilarious too
