i think it depends on the company - u do where i work
I think that so much of it is yours regardless, after a certain time you will need to return to work long enough to work out your notice. May be able to use annual leave for part of this notice period.
Different companies may have more relaxed rules than the basic legal requirements.
Maybe worth checking with CAB or your companies HR dept.
