This interview I went for I told them I can start on 10th October but just remembered I got a concert that night. Are they normally OK if I said I need early finish or start the next if I am successful.

I would wait and see if you get the job first. No point in worrying about it until then. They might not even want you to start on that date anyway and employers are often quite good at honouring pre booked holidays so one night might not be too much of a problem.

why dont you apply for a job in new look? You'll probably get staff discount

Yes I would but hours were only part time
As we don't know the employer, how would we know if they are 'normally ok'?

I mean in general what should I do?
If I was the employer, I'd not really be that impressed - you said the starting date, and then want changes to be made to fit in with your social calendar?
Only one way to find out.

What is more important, job or concert?
And some of these answers are why people are reluctant to post on AB. Then they wonder why it is dying.
You can but ask.

But… if you get it and you get to start the day after, be sure that you don’t turn up late or with a hangover.
^ Why would she turn up with a hangover?
I'd fire you.
Incidentally, the concert, are you audience or performer ?
This insidious cynicism is what's killing this site.
Actually thats a good point Canary.

As a person that has employed a fair few people I may well be persuaded on a one off if it was the performer option.

Mind you I did once have a fella that claimed he had found god and wanted to attend some vicar course or something. He wanted to leave early so I said provided he made the hours up I wasnt bothered. However he started leaving earlier and earlier and then not pitching on Monday. Eventually he sent me a text (it was about 14 years ago) saying he needed more time and God would guide me in my answer.

I replied God has guided me - your fired.

From what I can see people (who may well be or have been employer's are posting what they would do.

Surely that answers the question being asked?

Or do you think everyone should lie and say it will be fine?
No I don't but have you ever asked yourself what the mental state of some people who post on here might be? You have no idea about that and mocking people and making fun of them can have consequences. Shame on you.
OK lets dissect and answer this:

//No I don't but have you ever asked yourself what the mental state of some people who post on here might be?//

Why should I? If someone asks a question should I always answer positively because I might hurt feelings? What if that person (like I think this one does) wants and honest answer? Should they not get it just in case? Have you ever asked yourself that?

// You have no idea about that and mocking people and making fun of them can have consequences. //

I'm guessing you are some right on liberal. I haven't mocked anyone. I dislike people taking the pee and I am strong enough to act on it. You on the other hand probably have never managed or employed anyone would be my guess.

//Shame on you.//

No shame on me pal, I live in the real world. Someone asked a question, I answered honestly. Shame on you for wanting to mollycoddle people and then have them let down when the reality of life hits home. Ever thought about that?
