My company has just been taken over by another company. The new company have told us that if we take time off to look after ill children we don't get paid where as the my old company paid us. I have heard something about the law stating parents get a certain amount of paid leave per year to look after ill children. Can any one confirm if this is true and perhaps provide me with a web link to prove this.

Your employer is legally obliged to give you time off but not to pay you - that depends on your contract. This link should help.
