Do companies check that potential employees have the correct qualifications?
I am not talking about degrees I mean just GCSE's
I know someone who is wanting to apply for a post they are more than capable of doing but do not have the necessary GCSE in maths. Not really essential in the post

They may well ask to see the GCSE certificates.
It's up to the employer to decide what's essential rather than the applicant
if they have specifically stated that you must have something, then it will likely just annoy them if you apply and haven't.
fact is there will be many many applicants who have exactly what they have asked for so its unlikely this person will have any chance.
the problem is you can't just tell someone you can do something, you have to prove or demonstrate it.

however if the applicant has since gone on and got much better qualifications then they may 'outrank' the gcse's anyway

It would be a risky strategy to lie about the qualification in the hope that teh employer never asks for evidence. Far better to be honest and say in the supporting letter that although he/she doesn't have the qualification she has demonstrated through her career that she has the necessary skills...
Just before I retired from business having worked there for over 25 years the HR manager was going through my file and noticed that there was no sign of my original CV. He asked me if I still had a copy to give hime "for the sake of completeness" and was deeply shocked to discover that I had never supplied one.
why don't they do a GCSE equivalance test ...
usually avail at FE colleges ... ?

TTo be honest I personally am so old that the qualifications I took do not exist now neither does the school I attended and I have no idea about what subjects I took or the grades - I know I passed nine but I would be snookered if they asked me for the subjects or the boards
It's for my nephew and as I said he lacks a maths c
I know he does not need it for the job
I might suggest he goes as far as he can before he needs to produce it
He can always turn the job down if offered it
