I am training to be a primary school teacher and am thinking about going to America for a month in the summer following my NQT year. How practical would this be, I am aware teachers don't really have 6 weeks off due to planning etc and am concerned the school would frown upon me doing this. It won't be for another 3 years anyway but any advice would be appreciated!

Not sure about Schools and maybe they are all different anyway but I work in a College and lecturers are allowed a max of 4 weeks off in one go over the 6 or 7 week summer holiday. The rest of the time they should be in doing lesson plans etc for the next academic year (but usually aren't...), however as I said, schools might be different.

Ok, thanks very much! Hopefully schools will be similar!
You'll be fine. Check the holiday pattern of your school. Most still use the 3-term apattern with 6 weeks in summer. If you have prep to do make sure you cram it into the time you have available when you are back or before you go.
Plus, what you do in the school holidays is defintiely not your school's business, as long as it's legal and decent. So if they want to frown, let them.
I've worked in schools. Most are empty bar the premises staff for the duration of the summer holidays. The teaching staff put in their appearance a few days before the start of term telling us all about the recent long holiday in France or Spain or wherever they've been.

Just do it - you wouldn't be on your own.
