What can ski insurance cover?

Skiing holidays are a popular jaunt for many Brits, with thoundands travelling each year looking to hit the slopes and take to the powder at high speeds.

Because of the obvious increased risks involved when taking to the piste, normal holiday insurance will usually not cover someone for a ski trip, so extra costs for cover will be neccessary to ensure you have peace of mind on your holiday.

When heading away in search of sun and snow, a specific policy can be highly advised, which could be useful for a number of reasons.

No one likes to think about accidents happening, but the truth is that they can occur at any moment, especially on a ski holiday. Some people believe that this type of insurance is avoidable and that they will save money by not opting in, but experts suggest that you take this cover seriously or be left massively out of pocket come the end of your trip

The most obvious being that accidents can and do happen to even the most experience skiers – and the speeds some can hit while bolting down a mountain mean broken bones and fractures frequently happen.

Most insurers offer this kind of comprehensive cover, so finding it won't be too hard. It shouldn't matter if you are an experienced skier or a learner, the cost will be the same.

Experts do advise that you take some form of training when you arrive at the slopes. These lessons will teach you safety basics and will give you a greater sense of control over your actions on the slope by learning speed changes and how to come to a stop.

Medical cover is a pretty standard aspect of a policy, allowing access to treatment on foreign soil should the worst happen. No one wants to be given a bill for hundreds, even thousands of pounds when they have a limb set in a cast, so the policy offers you reassurance that everything is covered if you did end up injuring yourself.

Cancellations can also be covered, which may be more pertinent when you consider the environments where skiing holidays take place can be quite changeable. Whereas it's unlikely a destination like Majorca could become engulfed by natural matter, avalanches or heavy snow can mean destinations become inhabitable for periods of time. This means that if your holiday is marred by poor weather you will receive some form of compensation.

Other more common aspects of travel cover can also be included – such as loss of baggage or valuables – but its worth checking with a provider before signing on the dotted line and taking to the slopes.
