Fully comprehensive insurance just means your are covered in case you have damage to your car, an accident caused by you or someone else or a theft of or from your car.

It does not mean you are insured to drive anyone elses car, nor that anyone else is insured to drive yours.
Some policies offer 3rd party coverage driving other cars as apaid or complementary extra, but it would be written in your policy details, which everyone has.

So, unfortunately, not having read the policy details to know it wasnt included, is not going to be sufficient excuse for the police for being uninsured.
Drivers responsibility to insure he is insured, and your father in law could also be liable for lending the car to someone without proper insurance.

Thank you
Provided this is a first offence your partner is liable to a fine of about one week's net income (reduced by a third in the evnt of a guilty plea) and six penalty points.

If the police decide to take action against your brother-in-law he will be liable for a similar penalty.
your boy friend in the motortrade ??

originally most policies covered you to drive other peoples vehicles 3rd party with there consent...Over the years the ins.companys have clamped down on this practice due to over abuse of the system.

It also depends on your occupation, as i honestly declared on my insurance that i am in the motortrade my fully com only covers my vehicle.I knew this when i took the policy out but its only recently that i found out the reason.
There logic is that i would be driving customers/company cars on my personal policy.
This is absolute rubbish as i work for a multi billion pound group under there insurance. I tried to explain this to my ins. co. and could provide proof but they wouldnt budge on it... (tescos by the way).
