Hi

Looking for a little advice. A few days ago I was rear-ended while stopped at a roundabout, the guy gave me his name registration and phone number, but wants to pay for the damage himself, not through his car insurance. Has anybody had any experience of this? Should I report it to my insurance company?

Absolutely.
If you can guarantee he will pay up in full then no need to tell your insurance company, they will only use it against you in the future.

Thanks Dave50, thats what I'm afraid of - how do I guarantee that he will pay up.
^^^And how would you decide what the value of the repairs was and more importantly whether you were using a repair shop which was approved by your insurers?
i wouldnt mess around here. once you have messed up car insurance, its very hard to get it back to rights again. tell your insurers. mine ( many companies) have never been difficult over not my fault accidents and you wont have to worry or stress over it.
You get the quotes first, let them opt for the cheapest, then get the money up front. Simples.
I'd check your insurance policy - most insist that you report ALL accidents to them, even if you're not at fault or making a claim. If you don't you may find that some future claim is refused, since you will have broken the terms of the policy.
In any case, if matey does default, you can then go ahead with a claim on your policy.
Or get your garage to contact the person at fault directly for payment.
