How to use a dvd-rewriter?

I know obviously that I have to plug it in using the usb. I know how to download and have a bit.torrent, but as I have a small laptop there isn't a Nero programme, so what programme would I use to put it onto disc. I do not have one yet as want to be sure that I can use it and download divx.

just google freeware dvd burn and choose a prog.

and would I download it to pc and then will it stay there for future use? That sounds great. Sorry I am such a luddite.
