My phone has just informed me that I now have an answering service (have to dial 1571 to access it) but I want my answer machine to do this for me - how do I stop the answer service? Thanks

Look here .. This is a BT service, right!?

That's the thing - we have recently switched to Sky
You'd have to talk to BT. Personally we find 1571 quite adequate, it takes messages for us and we don't pay for it, it's all in with our monthly package.

I don't like it as I am used to looking at the answer machine and seeing it flashing if there is a new message. I didn't ask for it either and we are with Sky not BT so I'm not sure what's going on at the moment. I had messages on it that were over a week old because I did not know that I had this 'service'.
Just fill the web form in ... better than talking and waiting for those darn people in India or wherever they are. BT service is a nightmare on the phone : (
'Tis pointless contacting BT if it is a Sky Talk Line Rental account. You will need to contact Sky (in Livingston or Dunfermline) using the phone number on your bill.

Haven't had a bill yet (only switched about 3 weeks ago) but will look for a number to phone. Thought I could just put a number into the phone to cancel it. I am so used to looking at the answering machine flashing that I don't want to use this service at the moment.
They're probably charging you extra for this service too!..........I'd find a phone number for them and call them asap.......................
1571 is free with Sky.

"If you wish to discuss your Sky Talk account or experience problems making calls using Sky Talk, you should contact Sky Customer Services on 08442 410 499"...

I'm really hacked off about it as I only knew I had this 'service' when the phone rang to tell me I had one of those horrible text message things and 5 new messages (some of which were over a week old!). I'll sort it out tomorrow.
I agree that that damn 1571 service is a nuisance.
If you are on the phone and an incoming call attempts to contact, the stupid answering system cuts in to tell the caller - inviting them to leave a message but charging them the call cost for the privilege. It merely increases the call costs for all of us mere mortals in the long term.
I have an answerphone and 1571. I've set the answerphone to pickup within 4 rings - 1571 doesn't kick in till after 5. That way it beats 1571, but if anyone phones while I'm on a call they can still leave a message.
