Do these actually work? I have a cd mini system which was pretty cheap anyway, but for a while now i've had trouble with it. Some cd's sound juddery when i play them, is it worth trying a cleaner disc before i invest in a new system, and if so, are they all much the same, or is there a particular one i should look out for?

They are all the same, all do the same job!
They work because they clean the sensor, which well, cleans the sensor :P
Just thinking now - when did you last use the CD drive for your 'player'?

The CD has little tiny bristles on it that clear the sensor of dust. If the player is used often then there shouldn't be any dust on the sensor; when a normal CD rotates, the air moves the dust...

Oh right, ta diz, and do you think that would cure the "judderiness" ! don't know how else to describe it! Guess I'll just have to give it a go!
Judderness I assume means that the CD is jumping so that if I were to sing...

If I could turn back time, wooooahh

Your system would probably play:

f I *weird nose of my voice being scrambled* turn ba*kkkkkkkkk* time, woo, woo, woo.

Something like that :P

Use it regularly, well 4 or 5 times a week, some cd's are ok, but more often than not now they don't play properly, even a couple of new ones i got this week

Yep couldn't have described it better!

And I'm sure you don't have a weird nose!
How old is the system?

You said some work and some don't work so well? That leads me to believe it's not a 'dust/dirt' issue. If you can get a CD cleaner cheap - just to test to make sure, then I would. It sounds to me like the system is on it's way out.
If you live in the UK, which for some reason I think you do (don't ask me why I think that) -

£1.75 Buy it now, free postage :) (dispatches after 1 working day of received payment).

for £4.99 on amazon think i will give it a go, system only a couple of years old, but nothing seems to be built to last these days! ta diz, night night

Cross posting here, I'm so slow at typing! Will try ebay instead then x
Don't use amazon for that, it will cost you for postage and packaging too, use the ebay link I gave!
If you wish to pay £9.50 for a product that you can get from ebay at £1.75 then go ahead but it sounds ludicrous to me. You won't even get it any quicker as it's not from an amazon themselves... Night night, sleep well x
:0 cross posting too, I missed your posts :D hehe,

night night slinky :) x
a cd head cleaner can be beneficial as already stated as was why also.
cd player's for some reason in many cases seem to have the heads facing upwards this will mean dust will settle on the play / read head however static electricity can cause dust to settle on even a surface upside down.

i notice you say some cd's player better than others , with this in mind i suggest you also get a cd cleaner for the purpose of cleaning the actual cd's as even smugged finger marks can cause the effects your suffering .

the correct way to clean a cd is from the center to the outside " not following the circle " the reason for this is the cd's have small grooves and circular motion while cleaning can push dirt into these rather than out from the cd. it can also cause scretching.

as for cleaners they can be bought at many places and for many different places. another suggestion for finding possible places for cleaners would be the pound shop if you have one local and if they have any.
