I'm with British Gas and take both gas and electric from them, what I would like to know is whats cheaper - 35 mins at gas mark 5 or 9 mins in an 850w microwave?

Probably the microwave. Don't forget you'd need to pre-heat the oven to gas mark 5.

The Oven is 100000000000% safer so a few more pence for healths sake (e.g.Cancer) is well worth it,get rid of your microwave thats the best advice you will ever be given!!
