does any one know what the numbers stand for on my new variafocal glasses they are

and are very hard to see.

Depending on the make, the 0 either stands for 000 power or is actually a stylised s. If it's an S or O it's is solely to allow the fitting operator to tampo print the lens in the correct place to line up the lens in the frame - the print is then removed with acetone.

The 17 is also a power - +/- 175, this being the power of the varifocal part of the lens. The 1 is the third power, assuming the varifocal are trifocal. 99.99% of people will never ever notice these numbers, well done! Your eyesight is obviously not that bad!
