Hi Steve, my name is Jon Rog and I know for a fact that what you will be needing for your trip to Tenerife is just a valid passport. This is because you are not there to work and live for some years as you are in the UK. It's just an XMAS holiday. You can go for a holiday anywhere around the world with just a valid passport.
Careful! There are many countries where you will need a visa even for a holiday. As Tenerife and the other Canary Islands are part of Spain which, like the UK is a member of the European Union, you should not need a visa as you already have one for the UK. I believe that different Customs allowances apply though, so check what you can bring back into the UK.
Please bear in mind, Steve, that when flying to a country he crucial factor is not what the country's immigration rules are, but what the airline thinks they are - this is because the airline has the responsibility of tranporting you back if you're not admitted. It may therefore be worthwhile checking with the airline that there will be no problem if you turn up at check-in simply with your SA passport.
Stevie, if I'm you, I'll double check with the embasy of Tenerfie. Just do a search on the web for their embasy site. Good luck buddy!
