Whatever bamboo you choose find out from where you buy it from if it spreads,i have a black bamboo which i bought 6 yrs ago and i have it in a pot,i have since filled another 4 pots with it all from the first plant. Some bamboo spread so fast that when planted into the garden it can take over and be very hard to get rid of.
My black bamboo is now over 25' tall and has grown in girth too. Not a good plant for a small garden. You can get bamboo which is not so thugish in nature. The smaller bamboos are cheaper too.
Agree with Mizi. Plant it in a container that you can sink into the soil, or you may end up being sorry you ever thought of growing it! Sheer murder to get rid of!
the most common black bamboo is phyllistachys nigra (excuse the dodgy spelling) which every b and q and garden centre will sell. it wont spread but will form quite a big strong clump. quite happy being grown in a large pot as long as its well watered or it will drop its leaves
