WIthout asking him, I would guess he is some kind of security guard? He is probably situated at the entrance to stop people running out with shoplifted goods.

The best way to find out would be to ask him.
It's a 'greeintg' idea, which works well in American stores, where they are far more open to being spken to by complete strangers.

Like so many imports, it doesn't really work in our culture, leaving customers feeling embarassed and unsure of how to react.

Don't worry, they see the light and find him something esle to do eventually.

Too old to be a security guard.
My guess is that he's a greeter. His job is to smile benignly at customers and say g'mornin'. Quite what this achieves is beyond me, still.....he looks chirpy enough.
Awww Andy's reply wasn't there when I submitted my reply, I wasn't echoing him- honest!
Never noticed one!
Nor me. Is that all he wears?
Never seen a greeter at Tesco, but they do have them at Asda.
OOOOps have I missed something here - he (and it shouldn't just be Men) acts as a Commissionaire - he should always have a friendly smile and a welcome basket for you and advise you if you have any problems, where to take them to - and I have to say the more these supermarkets - not just Tesco - Asda is very good! - employ these older members of the community - the more I am Pleased - one to give them something to be proud of doing and earning a bit of a wage but also to get them out of their 'wives -partners - husbands' hair for a few hours of the day!!!!!
the one at my old local Tesco was a right charmer, I couldnt get away from him, took me eons to do my shopping lol
Its father christmas you idiots he can,t stand there all year in his red outfit

Thank you all.

He is still there tis morning, being totally ignored by everyone.

It was all making sense, the greeters idea and the British reserve meaning it just doesn't work.

But then clever trev explained the truth, and the scales fell from my eyes!
