How to figure out percentages?

What percentage of �40 is �8. How do I go about working this out using a pen and paper, No calculator. any help would be great. I have a test coming up with lots of these questions on it.

Well Lauralane, if you are a Maths teacher I'm starting to see the problem. Come on you know that percentages are simple Arithmetic, if you don't then god help the kids you teach, are you saying that A/B x 100 is not simple arithmetic? It ain't exactly intregration is it?
FYI I did acknowledge in the post above yours that arithmetic is a branch of maths. Thanks for confirming it.

My wife is a history teacher...... very very knowledgeable about history....... but ask her to add 2 and 2 and she will go into overload.

my point is that not everybody is a genius at maths....

There are two ways to figure out percentages. The first is to use a calculator, but this can be time consuming. The second way is to use the following formula:

percentage = number of desired things/total number of things

For example, if you want to know what percentage of your friends are dog lovers, you would divide the number of friends who are dog lovers by the total number of friends you have.
