I need to obtain a copy marriage certificate and after visiting my local register office, I can only get it from the church where we got married. The church in question does not have a listed phone number in any of the phone books.

Short of attending sunday service and speaking to the vicar directly, is there any other way of contacting him such as a religious directory?

I've never heard of a registry office that can't provide you with a short or full version of your marriage certificate.
Can you not write a letter?
As The Corbyloon suggests, a letter addressed to the vicar (at the church) will probably find its way to him. (Even if, as is likely, there's no letter box, the Post Office will probably get the letter to the addressee).

However, the 'religious directory' you refer to is called Crockford's Clerical Directory. It lists all clergy for the Church of England, the Church in Wales, the Church of Ireland and the Scottish Episcopal Church. Major reference libraries may have a copy. Otherwise any vicar (of the relevant churches) will either have a copy or know how to contact someone (such as his bishop) who can look up the relevant contact details.

And if it's a Catholic church, the Catholic Directory, published on behalf of The Bishops' Conference of England and Wales (Gabriel Communications Ltd) would help you

The register office only have marriage certificates listed up to 1988 for this church - seems odd to me but there you go....I got married in 1992.

Writing a letter seems like the best and perhaps only option short of turning up in person!
If it is a Church of England church, then contact the office of the bishop that covers the area, easy to find on the internet. I got in contact with a church easily this way.
All births, deaths, and marriages are officially recorded at the General Register Office at St Catherine's House in London. A copy of any marriage certificate can be obtained through the website here.
