the same as any engine.
Actually, when the key is in the shut off position for diesel engines the electrical power (usually 12v) is removed from a solenoid valve on the high-pressure (3,000 lbs.) injector pump, thereby shuting off the fuel to the engine. Problem is, if air can still flow into the engine, the engine, especially if at operating temperature, can continue to run (known as dieseling on gasoline engines), so therefore, some engine manufacturers also provide an electric or manual air flow shut off valve if the engine won't top properly.
clannad,im glad you can explain it so well.
Sometimes an engine can't be shut off - I've seen it twice happen - The Turbo goes, sucks oil out of the sump - burns it in the cylinders and revs the car to destruction - you should see the reek that comes out of it when they do so.
Sounds like my misses.
