They cannot seriously expect to take out channels such as Sky1 etc, blame sky then just move on and expect no backlash.

Virgin just don't seem to want to pay extra and this is after bumping up subscription prices and introducing a 'fair use' policy.

When I phoned virgin they said there would be no reduction in charges even after the channels have been removed.

This is OnDigital all over again.

You imply that Sky are blameless.

Would you continue to buy a product that doubled in price overnight?

Bear in mind that Sky recently secured a 75% reduction in what it pays for channels including Living TV and Bravo from Flextech.

Flextech is a Virgin Media subsidiary.

So much for swings and roundabouts....
This is not Virgin's fault, you need to get all the facts - it is Sky who are stopping them using the services as they are worried they will overtake them.

I have dealt with Virgin for many years, and have been very happy. However you also need to remember that this is still NTL rebranded to have more appeal.

You need to view what others are saying. Most say they will move on to SKY or Freeview and ditch virgin.

Watch out in the papers re this story in the coming days.

Oh and flextech don't own sky one, sky news or sky sports news etc.
Everyone I know that may be affected have said they'll do without Sky.
Who said that Flextech owns any Sky channels? (the clue to who owns Sky One, Sky News, etc. is in the name)

My point is that Sky received a 75% reduction from a VM subsidiary and followed up with a 100% price hike in return.

BTW, in pulling the channels Sky will lose around �1.8 million per month in revenue from VM; Sky will need several hundred thousand new subscribers to recoup that level of loss.
I am with Virgin Media, Been a customer of Virgin for years, and am very pleased with the service they provide.
Got their letter this morning, saying whats happening with Sky, I will be staying with them.
i agree - i have ntl/virgin and i think good on them for not giving in to sky - plus it means no more bl00dy lost or sky sports news in my house which is excellent news!
Like Lonnie, I am a Virgin Media customer and though annoyed initially at the loss of the channels, I will not be swapping service provider. If I can't live without Sky One, I need a life check! Am disappointed my monthly bill will not be reduced, however. That's is a bit naughty.
NTL/Virgin customer too and this certainly won't make me want to switch to Sky, I also agree good on Virgin for not backing down and will wait to see what they will offer in the future.
At the moment Sky and Virgin Media are in a battle about who provides your home media needs.

Sky now see VM as a big threat and will do anything to spoil their party.

Sky recently bought a stake in ITV purely to stop Virgin buying them.

I think they deliberatley put the price of Sky1up in the hope that Virgin would not pay it, so Virgin would have to write to all their subscriber with bad news after all the recent good news.

Typical spoiling tactics.

If Virgin do want channels like Sky1 and so on then they are going to have to start providing them themselves (hence the reason why they tried to buy ITV)
Unless Sky One start broadcasting some 'appointment' television, I won't be missing it. In fact, I've not actually watched anything on Sky One since I realised that Family Guy was better than The Simpsons.

Apart from Sky One and Sky News, are there any other channels that have disappeared?
Ditch the lot of these pay to view, it's only a shame that it is against the law not to have a TV licence for watching BBC.

Incidently it must be against the Law to watch a tape with a VCR, without a licence. Because the other week I had need to replace my old VCR, with a new one from Argos. This was so I could transfer some of my old tapes onto DVD.

Imagine my suprise when I had to furnish Argos with my name and address, so that they could inform Television Licensing Authority, of my purchase.
an offence is committed if you receive any broadcast tv services (from whatever source, be it satellite, cable terrestrial or freeview) without a licence.

as sold, a VCR can receive broadcast tv services, so technically requires you to have a licence; you could then disable the tuning device and provided this prevents the receipt of broadcasts (and you can prove it to the authorities if they ask), you can watch pre-recorded videos without a licence.

Hang on, I don't think that's true. Sure, you need a licence if you have a piece of equipment which can receive television broadcasts, but a VCR cannot receive broadcasts. It can only records off a television receiver.

As a recent Virgin/NTL subscriber, this has annoyed me greatly.

Sky Sports News is televisual wallpaper in my house. It's my default channel whenever I turn the TV on.

I don't expect Virgin to pay over the odds for these channels but at the same time I wouldn't expect them to hold me to the remainder of my contract given that the package I'll be receiving is materially different to what I signed up to.

What is my legal position? I have about 10 months left on my contract. Am I free to leave?
sp1814 - of course a VCR is able to receive broadcasts. It has its own tuner, otherwise you would not be able to tape any programmes other than the one being viewed on the TV (also it can record with no TV attached). Thus, it must be covered by a valid licence.

All UK suppliers of TV broadcast receiving equipment must by law furnish the TV Licensing Authority with the name and address of any person buying such equipment.
