I'm not an expert on it but I do have sky multi room and you do need two separate cables. My dish had to be altered slightly to take the two cables so it had to be done by a sky engineer. You also have to subscribe to multi room.
What I did recently was ,like you, obtain a second SKY digibox and then buy and fit a double LNB(14) which replaced the original LNB(the bit in front of the dish). I fitted a second cable to the new LNB; drilled a hole through the wall to a bedroom and now we have SKY in that room. Actually we have FREESAT which cost a one of payment of 20. The real trouble with multi-room etc is that one still has to pay a subscription.
In skill terms of DIY the fitting of a new LNB is simple but this presupposes that one is able to get to the SKY dish in the first place.
To get FREESAT all you have to do is connect everything up to the new digibox and phone SKY who will ask for some info.
Just an alternative idea for you.
You need :
dual lnb (2 0utputs) or quad (4 o/p)lnb or if you want octal (8 o/p)lnb
the lnb is the bit in front of the dish face.
wire back to new receiver (sat cable is twin sceened)
You only need to speak toSky if you want Sky programs. They will supply a Mirror card which replicates your main card and will cost approx 10-15 / month.

If you just want BBC 1,2,3,4 Itv channels , sky news and about 50 + freebies including movies CNN, music, but NOT ch4 or 5
you can just watch away.
You ONLYneed a Freesat card for ch 4 and 5 @20 one off payment
