I have just bought a laptop for the first time, having had a PC for years. I don't understand the wireless thing. I know that I have to buy an indoor router, but is it then free? Or do I have to subscribe to something? When I use it in cafes and airports etc, where they have a wireless area, does the wireless thing automatically kick in - and does it cost anything? treat as an idiot please!

for at home you will have to have a wirless routr you plug into your phone line. This then transmits the internet to your laptop. To get internet, you'll need to get an internet service provider, same as you do for a desktop. You can get free broadband with orange i think, and talk talk, but otherwise you'll have to pay .. either dial up pay as you go, or broadband expect to pay around 15-25 punds a month depending on the speed.
When you use it in "HOTSPOTS" you dont have to pay
I'll just add that some hotspots in airports etc. you do have to pay for -- a few pounds an hour or something like that.
